PROCLAMATION FOR GREATER LOVE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS, an African proverb declares “Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter” the meaning of which is to recognize the importance of understanding stories from different perspectives; and

WHEREAS, students learn to patriotically, Remember the Alamo or Never Forget 9/11!  But other historical narratives are down played with the expectation to just get over it; and

WHEREAS, a just and righteous GOD commanded his people to REMEMBER and to        establish a memorial of instruction to teach each generation about the Passover experience of how HE delivered them from slavery in Egypt in Exodus 12: 14; and

WHEREAS, it has been established that the first Memorial Day Observance in America  was established by black church people on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC;  and

WHEREAS, on this same day the first Sunday of May being May 1st , the Greater Love  Missionary Baptist Church presided over at its start by Rev. Floyd Murray will celebrate   the 17th  anniversary of its founding under Pastor Montinas Peterson and first having its origin as the African Baptist Church started in 1857 by Jacob Emmons and the Randolph Freedmen in Rossville; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with a historical anniversary service at Greater Love             Missionary Baptist Church and held with her Randolph instituted sister church, Cyrene   African Methodist Episcopal Church for the purpose of honoring the Randolph struggle     for freedom as an “inclusive heritage”  in doing the RIGHT Thing, and 

NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE KNOWN THAT I, Kathryn B. Hinds, Mayor of the City of Piqua, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2016 as 

MEMORIAL DAY in the City of Piqua.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed    the Seal of the City of Piqua, Ohio, this 1st day of May 2016
