P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, sports are a fundamental part of our life as Americans. They foster our country’s competitive drive, help us stay healthy and teach us what it takes to succeed, not only on the softball diamond or the basketball court, but also in life. Sports and fitness reflect our national character and they help us unlock our full potential; and
WHEREAS, it is important for all Piqua citizens to understand and participate in physical fitness because it is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise can produce long-term health benefits; it can help prevent chronic diseases, combat obesity, relieve stress, and increase the chances of living longer. By making physical activity part of your daily routine, at least 30 minutes for adults and 60 minutes for children, you can put yourself on the path to better physical and mental health; and
WHEREAS, because of the importance in teaching the young citizens of our community the importance of health and wellness, during the 2014-2015 school year, the administration, teachers and staff at Bennett Intermediate School started a Run Club which has now continued at Piqua’s new Intermediate School Piqua Central, known as PCIS; and
WHEREAS, under the dedicated leadership of 6th grade teacher Crystal Ayers, who is an avid runner herself, all 6th graders had the opportunity to be a part of Run Club. Over 80 children responded and have been practicing after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays since the first day in late February; and
WHEREAS, High School and Jr. High School Cross Country Coach Steve Frazier and the High School and Jr. High School Cross Country teams have been coming over during the 10 weeks of practices to train and run with the 6th graders. Through their dedication and energy, many 6th graders now love to run; and
WHEREAS, because of these dedicated teachers, PCIS staff and of course Principal Jennie Gearhardt, who is a runner herself, the PCIS Run Club children have learned the importance of regular exercise and invite all Piqua citizens to invest in their own well-being by finding a way to be active each day. By making daily healthy choices, all Piqua citizens can strengthen their bodies and minds and build a foundation that supports their greatest aspirations; and
WHEREAS, so may we as the citizens of Piqua encourage one another to get involved in sports and fitness activities and together, forge a healthier future for ourselves, our loved ones and the City of Piqua; and
WHEREAS, and now on this last day of practice, April 28, 2016 and knowing that this Sunday, May 1, 2016 the PCIS Run Club will run in the Heroes & Villains 5K which is put on and benefits the Piqua High School and Piqua Junior High School Cross-Country programs, as their final Run Club activity.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE KNOWN THAT I, Kathryn B. Hinds, Mayor of the City of Piqua, Ohio, do hereby proclaim April 28th, 2016 as
PIQUA CENTRAL INTERMEDIATE RUN CLUB DAY!
